The Rutland and Melton constituency has a fairly complicated local government structure.
The county of Rutland is a unitary (single layer) council, and it is responsible for everything any council is ever responsible for, such as education, social services and highways.
The rest of the constituency has two layers. At the top, for all the non-Rutland area, is Leicestershire County Council. It looks after the bigger responsibilities such as education and highways.
Below them in the constituency are all of Melton Borough Council, which covers Melton Mowbray, Asfordby and the Vale of Belvoir, and about one third of Harborough District Council, covering the villages along the A47 towards Leicester and down to villages like Melbourne.
