Following the General Election, the Conservatives successfully formed a coalition with the Liberal Democrats. I am thrilled that David Cameron was invited to Buckingham Palace to be appointed Prime Minister, and I am pleased that we are working so well our Liberal Democrat colleagues. Together, with a strong majority in Parliament, we can tackle the budget deficit, begin to draw back the surveillance state and make politics more accountable.
Shortly after the formation of the Government, the Prime Minister appointed me as Minister of State for International Development and invited me to join the Privy Council. In my new role, I look forward to working with the Secretary of State, Andrew Mitchell, to ensure that aid gets to those who need it most and makes a real difference to people's lives.
